He first caught the racing bug when building a soap-box derby car for his grandson. "Carter just didn't have the mass needed to get it rolling", said Ron, who piloted the plywood and recycled plastic creation to the Soapbox Series Championship.
With that taste of speed, Ron decided to move on to powered vehicles and wheel-to-wheel competition. He won his first Kart championship at the age of 61 in the face of formidable 8 and 9 year-old competitors. His success did not go unnoticed.
From Karting, Ron moved up to Legends cars and attracted Geritol as his sponsor. Ron proved that he could drive product sales as well as a racecar and the company built a marketing campaign around him with the tagline, "You're Only as Old as You Feel". It was a huge hit. While Ron was nipped for the championship by an up-and-coming JJ Yeley, his ability to charm a TV audience and uncanny donut skills allowed him to move up once again.
Ron hit the big-time. GPS Data Acquisition giant Traqmate, came on board as his primary sponsor and put together a sports car team with Ron as their principal driver. While the team is finding its legs and Ron is still adapting to the huge power of his Spec Miata, Team Traqmate has not had the season it would like but the results have been encouraging. Ron is looking forward to finishing the season strong and competing for the championship next year.
After that, Ron is considering moving to Superbikes.
